In Washington State, LINC began this process in 2004 with The Washington Artists Health Insurance Project (WAHIP), a comprehensive survey to collect information concerning the current health insurance status of artists and arts workers in Washington State. Working in tandem with Artist Trust, The Social & Economic Sciences Research Center (SESRC), and Washington State University, as well as over a dozen Washington arts entities including 4Culture of King County, the Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, the Washington State Arts Alliance, Theater Puget Sound, Northwest Film Forum, and the Washington State Arts Commission, WAHIP has been a major success, and its findings have supported further efforts in Washington State.
LINC Philadelphia took advantage of the survey work in Washington by comissioning CCG Benefits Consulting Group to conduct a simlary study of health insurance and artists in Philadelphia. This recently completed survey also served as a feasibilitystudy for providing health insurance to individual artists, by including assessments of both the need and opportunity, as well as a recommendation on the implementation of insurance benefits in the near future.
